In the tradition of Frank McCourt and Angela's Ashes, Donald Dempsey chronicles one boy's ordeals with poverty, religion, and physical and mental abuse as he attempts to come of age with only his street smarts and sense of humor to guide him.
Twelve-year-old Donny is a real-life cross between Huckleberry Finn and Holden Caulfield. Donny is doing his best to navigate the world he shares with his cruel and neglectful mother, his mother's abusive boyfriends, churchgoers who want to save Donny's soul, and a best friend who wants Donny to go to work for a dangerous local thug doing petty theft and dealing drugs.
Donny does everything he can to take care of himself and his younger brothers, but with each new development, the present becomes more fraught with peril--and the future more uncertain.

Honestly, I bought this book because it was cheap non-fiction and had a bunch of good reviews. I didn't have high expectations at all. Then I read the opening lines.I finished Betty's Child in 2 days, and the minute I shut the cover, I opened my computer to leave a review - at 3:45 in the morning. I read 6 or 7 books a month, and to be moved this much by something that isn't a "To Kill a Mockingbird" is unusual for me.
Donny's story is so stark and touching and real that several times I experienced that panicky, tight-chested, fist-balling anger mixed with helplessness and frustration. It's pretty obvious again and again that all hell's about to break loose, yet you have that silly hope that when you turn the page things will - please, just maybe, this kid needs a break - be okay.
Sad thing is, we have all known a Donny or two, and some of us have known and not only been snookered by, but supported Bettys. Unfortunately, it's sometimes easier to fool ourselves with "it's not that bad" scenarios and make excuses for the bruises and behavior, or decide it's none of our business what goes on behind closed doors. I consider myself a pretty observant, open person who is a savvy judge of character, yet I wonder how often I've missed signs or subtle cries for help. I already know that I've often let let bravado, push-back, bluster, and anger cause me to walk away mad - when I should have recognized someone who is simply backed into a corner, figuratively hissing and clawing and fighting to hide and/or defend the only life they know - even if it's a bloody nightmare.
Unfortunately, there just CAN'T be an "easy fix" no matter how much we think/hope we're gonna get Shirley Temple gratitude for pulling a sick family apart. And maybe we can't do surgery and fix the whole injury at once, but each of us has the power to do emotional first aid by providing a safe, soft place for any Donny to land as well as some love and unconditional acceptance that will boost him through one more day.

Betty Child eBook Donald Dempsey Reviews
This is just a heart breaking, wonderful book. Donny is very special person with a huge talent. When a book makes you laugh and cry, you can't ask for more. I have come to believe that those who survive extremely difficult lives often do so because of their God given gift of a sense of humor that provides them with a cushion against their awful circumstances. This is Donny. This fabulous boy, given so little parental love and guidance, learned to love deeply and to accept responsibility way beyond his years. At the end of Donny's life with Betty and the repurcusions of their separation, I was truly upset because I had come to care so much for Donny and his brothers. He only briefly mentions that life after Betty was with it's own set of challenges and I hope he will tell us about them in his next book.
After reading this book, I found it offensive that the version cost only $2.99. I have spent four times that amount for nonfiction books that can't touch this. I can't really remember the last time I stayed up until 4 AM reading if, in deed, there was another time.
My mother's name was Betty and I partially chose to read this book for that reason. In addition to sharing the name, my mother also displayed some of the poor parenting habits that Dempsey portrays. My mother's character disorder was less severe than Dempsey's mother's, perhaps, and at least some of her children benefited by having a present and patient father. Being Betty's child left its mark on me but more so on my five siblings, some of whom became versions of our Betty that rivaled Dempsey's characterization of his mother. There are parts of his story that resonate with me in their poignant vibrancy. There are parts that are amateur depictions. On the whole, though, the book is compelling and worthy on its own. I know many Bettys very well and have witnessed the after effects of her antics in those who I love. Dempsey does an excellent job of describing the struggle in surviving a Betty way of life. He sounds like a survivor who knows that to live beyond Betty isn't enough. Truly rejecting Betty's legacy and recovering from the trauma of being raised by a psychopath comes ironically by embracing Betty's legacy and the pain that comes with all of the loss encountered in that existence. Thank you, Donald, for writing this.
I love a book that makes me like and empathize with the characters. I was drawn in right away and hung on every word until the end! I was haunted by some parts and entertained by others. This book is about survival. Trying to make it through life when you’re helpless to the consequences of an irresponsible, neglectful, lazy and selfish parent. The oldest brother to two younger brothers. Donny has to assume the role of parent more times than not. Finding ways to make money so they have something to eat. They had to move way too often because their so called Mom felt the heat of her check fraud catching up to them. Those poor boys had to deal with different men coming into their lives and the circumstances that can come with that. They never had nice clothes or any of the trendy things that help you fit in when going to school. The cards were stacked against them on every front. I became so invested in their struggles and truly came to care about them!
